Kevin J. Holland reviews six colorful decades in the history of "America's Last Interurban"---the Chicago South Shore & South Bend Railroad---as documented by a group of outstanding photographers between 1941 and 2001. The intervening years saw almost constant change on the South Shore, from the modernized passenger car fleet and rebuilt freight locomotives that emerged from the road's Michigan City shops in the 1940s and 1950s, through the first major diesel inroads of the early 1970s, right up to the debut of a brand-new fleet of state-of-the-art passenger cars in 1982. All of these milestones, and many more, are presented in full color.
